BEAVERTON — The Roseburg High School baseball team capped an undefeated spring break with a 3-2 win over Oregon City on Thursday in the Mountainside Spring Break Tournament.
James Coleman made his first start on the mound and fired a complete game to earn his first win of the season. The senior allowed six hits while striking out nine and walking two.
Coleman outdueld Oregon City senior Dane Lais, who is committed to Oregon State University.
Lais struck out Roseburg batters 11 times over six innings, but was touched up for three runs on seven hits.
Austin Takahashi got Roseburg (7-1) on the board with an RBI single in the third inning that scored Jordan White, who led off the frame with one of three doubles for the Indians.
Oregon City (2-6) tied the game in the fourth on a single by Luke Hornback. The Pioneers took the lead later that inning on a double steal that got Hornback across home safely.
Roseburg responded quickly to even up the score. Parker Burke singled in the bottom of the fourth to drive in Jake Johnson.
Takahashi scored the go ahead run in the fifth through his own determination.
The University of Portland commit hit a two-out double and then two pitches later stole third. The throw from catcher Ryder Loftis got away from third baseman Alex Baker allowing Takahashi to come home for a 3-2 advantage.
Takahashi finished 2-for-3 on the day to lead Roseburg at the plate. Ryder Loftis was 3-for-3 in the box for the Pioneers.
Roseburg resumes Southwest Conference play with a make-up doubleheader against Grants Pass on Monday. The Indians and Cavemen will play at Grants Pass High School starting at 2 p.m.
