One patient suffered burns in a small fire which was isolated to one room at CHI Mercy Medical Center on Northwest Stewart Parkway in Roseburg Friday afternoon.
Fire Chief Tyler Christopherson of the Roseburg Fire Department said crews responded at approximately 3:50 p.m. Christopherson said they arrived on scene to find the fire alarm sounding and heavy smoke showing in the medical unit on the second floor of the commercial structure.
Firefighters confirmed that a fire had occurred. It was quickly extinguished by the quick action of Mercy employees. Firefighters provided assistance in ventilation and removal of smoke as well as assisting with moving patients to other rooms for continued care.
Christopherson said upon investigation, the cause of the fire was determined by be from a patient smoking a cigarette while on oxygen while inside the patient’s room. One patient received burns to the upper body and is in serious condition. At least one employee suffered smoke inhalation. Mercy spokesperson Sarah Baumgartner said others involved in the incident were evaluated and released.
Christopherson said RFD would like to thank Mercy employees for their prompt action in extinguishing the fire and rescuing the patient who suffered serious burns. He said the swift action of the employees stopped the spread of the fire and saved lives.
